COMMUNITY REPORT CARD 

The Huntingdon County Care4Kids Initiative is pleased to present its report card of activities in 2003-2004. 

What is the Care4Kids Initiative and its Purpose?  Care4Kids is a community-based early care and education planning team working with parents, child care and early education providers, and member organizations of Families and Communities Together (Families & Communities Together) Collaborative to promote a comprehensive plan for enhancing early care and education in Huntingdon County.

Our vision is that children in Huntingdon County will be healthy, safe, successful and ready for life.  Our mission is to promote quality, affordable, and accessible child care and early education opportunities for children of Huntingdon County.  To accomplish our mission, we support parents and child care and early education providers with the best tools, skills, and resources to create a healthy, safe, and educationally-appropriate child care environment.

Activities and Accomplishments.  The primary focus of the Initiative is to improve the quality of life of children from birth to 16 years of age in Huntingdon County.  The Initiative is proud to report the following accomplishments related to its priorities:

Assess and increase the capacity of child care:

Ø    133% increase in the number of child care providers applying for First Steps to STARS grants.

Ø    Developed a county map locating child care providers and areas in need of child care services.

Enhance the quality of early care and education:

Ø    Provided training to 94% of child care providers in developing child care emergency plans consistent with Huntingdon County’s Emergency Management Plan

Ø    Coordinating “Books for Babies”—a guide promoting early childhood and family literacy

Support child care provider education and career development:

Ø    Provided increased and low-cost local training opportunities for child care providers

Ø    Developed a Child Care Provider Support Network

Advocate for quality child care especially for children with special needs:

Ø    Raised awareness of the need for child care services for children with special needs

Promote public and parent awareness and education about quality early care and education opportunities:

Ø    Published a Community Resource/Referral Guide for parents

Ø    Publishing Care4Kids “Families & Communities Together Sheets” that promote public/parent education about early care and school readiness

Ø    Produced “I Can Be At Work Today Because of Quality Child Care” window clings promoting the need for and use of quality child care services.
